Types of Licenses

Types of Licenses

Understanding the difference between New York City firearm licenses is an important first step before beginning the application process. Each license type has a specific purpose, set of restrictions, and rules for possession, carry, storage, and transport. Whether you are applying for a Concealed Carry License, a Premises/Residence Handgun License, or a Rifle/Shotgun Permit, it is important to choose the license that matches your needs and to review the current NYPD requirements before submitting your application.

NYC Concealed Carry License vs. Premises Residence License

NYC Carry License vs. Premises Residence License:

If you want to legally carry a concealed handgun outside your home in New York City, you should apply for a Carry License. A Premises Residence License is tied to your residence and does not allow general concealed carry; it mainly allows transport of an unloaded handgun in a locked container, with ammunition carried separately, to authorized locations such as ranges or shooting clubs. Always review current NYPD rules before applying.

NYC Premises/Residence Handgun License for Home Protection

Premises/Residence License:

A New York City Premises/Residence License allows a licensed individual to keep a handgun at the residence listed on the license for lawful self-defense within the home. This is a restricted handgun license, which means it does not authorize everyday concealed carry outside the residence. When transport is allowed, the handgun must generally be unloaded, secured in a locked container, and the ammunition carried separately, with travel made directly to and from authorized locations such as an approved shooting range or other permitted destination under applicable rules.

NYC Rifle / Shotgun Permit for Purchase, Possession, and Lawful Transport

Rifle/Shotgun Permit:

A New York City Rifle/Shotgun Permit allows a licensed individual to purchase and possess rifles and shotguns in New York City. This permit is intended for lawful ownership and possession, rather than general concealed carry. When transporting a rifle or shotgun, the firearm should generally be unloaded and carried in a non-transparent case, with ammunition kept separate. If transported in a vehicle, it should be secured in the trunk and never left unattended.
